What is the Reality Checkpoint?

This is the lamp post in the centre of Parkers Piece. In 1997 Colin Rosenstiel said “The name was coined in the hippie era in the early 1970s. The name was painted on by some CCAT (now Anglia Ruskin University) students under the guidance of one of their teachers who was a councillor. […] Part of the column has been re-painted but the original inscription hasn't been. Some sort of replacement inscription has been attempted, but the lettering is much cruder than the original.”

In January 1998 a new brass plaque was spotted by John Rickard affixed to the lamp post bearing the words “REALITY CHECKPOINT”. This remained until July when Keir Finlow-Bates spotted it had been removed and reported this on cam.misc, which lead to the following confession from Adrian Custard: “Given this terrible and disappointing state of affairs, I feel it necessary to make the following statement: On the 20th of December, 1997, I bought the brass plaque with Reality Checkpoint inscribed on it from a place in Lion's Yard, and some Araldite and superglue from B&Q. Then, on 2 Jan., 1998 I glued the plaque to the lamppost with the araldite and superglue, as a tribute to the tradition of Reality Checkpoint. I was surprised that it took more than three weeks for the plaque to be noticed in this newsgroup. Anyway, it is disappointing that it only took 6 months for the plaque to be removed, but, c'est la vie.”
